As every year, when spring reaches its peak splendor, Madrid gives itself over to one of its most special, authentic and beloved celebrations: the festivities in honor of our patron saint, San Isidro Labrador.
This humble Madrileño, canonized four centuries ago for his simplicity and dedication to work, is venerated not only in our city, but throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
His devotion has spread even across the ocean, reaching chapels and churches in Latin America and the Philippines, carrying with it the essence of Madrid’s culture and tradition.
From the 9th to the 15th of May, the Madrid City Council has once again prepared an extensive cultural program to celebrate this festivity. Madrileños will gather in iconic squares and parks, such as Plaza Mayor, Lavapiés, El Retiro and Las Vistillas, as well as at Matadero and cultural centers, to take part in a variety of activities. Of course, the pilgrimage to the Pradera de San Isidro cannot be missed, where music, dancing and fun will fill the air.
Artists such as Los del Río, Ella Baila Sola, Azúcar Moreno, Nancys Rubias, Antonio José, Russian Red, Diana Navarro and the Municipal Symphony Band, among others, will perform for all tastes. From chotis to flamenco and, why not, electronic music. Musical variety will be an essential part of the celebration. In addition, there will be giants and big-heads, fireworks and, of course, delicious Madrid cuisine, with its cocido, calamari sandwiches and the classic chocolate with churros.
San Isidro is not only a celebration of the past, but also an opportunity to shape the future and enjoy the present. Madrileños and visitors alike, let us enjoy these days full of light, color and joy with the passion that characterizes our city in everything we do!
